Swamp Lore

Everything we know about Mortimer, gathered from pond gossip, one water damaged notebook, and a rejection letter nobody asked for. Read it in order or hop around. The swamp does not grade you.

How this archive works

Nothing here was written by a historian. It was written by seven people who like a toad, plus one person who owns a scanner and takes that responsibility seriously. We collect what the pond gives us. Some of it is verifiable. Most of it is damp.

Every entry carries a canon grade so you know what you are holding. A Wet Fact has two witnesses and a photo, or a physical object we can touch. A Damp Claim has one witness and strong feelings. Pond Gossip has neither, and we keep it anyway, because the swamp would be quieter without it.

We never delete a story for being false. We label it and let it stay. That policy has produced exactly one problem so far, and the problem is currently a well loved section of this page.

If you spot an error, bring it to the reeds. We correct things slowly, on purpose. Fast corrections tend to remove the part people loved.

The waking, in order

Nine moments between a normal Tuesday and a coin that measures moods. Scroll and the archive keeps your place.

0104:12, a Tuesday
allegedly

He woke up shaped like a wallet warning

Mortimer woke broad at the bottom, pointed at the top, and radiating the exact energy of a screen that asks if you are sure. Nobody in the reeds had met a toad shaped like a caution triangle. Two dragonflies left immediately. One stayed to watch, and that one is still with us.

He did not know he was a warning. He thought he was a nice shape. Both things were true at once, which is how most of this archive goes.

Wet Fact

Exactly one heart, slightly used

Seven minutes later he found a heart in the reeds. Warm, which suggested somebody had been holding it recently and had decided that holding it was too much. Ownership was never established. Nobody came back for it.

Mortimer picked it up and has not put it down. Every supply argument in this community starts and ends right here. One heart is the entire float. There is no second heart in the treasury. There is no plan to mint one, and the plan to not mint one is the closest thing we have to governance.

One heart. No inflation. Terrible tokenomics, excellent posture.notebook, page 6

The whole budget, spent badly

His budget for the day was twelve dried beetles, which in the swamp buys either a week of quiet or one memorable afternoon. He spent all twelve on being incorrectly adorable. Not correctly adorable. Correct would have needed symmetry, a smaller mouth, and at least one dry patch.

By noon he had zero beetles, a heart he did not own, and a reputation. Analysts still call this the most efficient capital allocation in swamp history, mostly because nobody has produced a competing chart.

The first logged feeling

On the third day Mortimer felt something he could not name, so he scratched a mark into a flat stone. Then another mark, slightly different. Then eleven more before the light went. Thirteen marks, thirteen moods, one stone.

That stone is the direct ancestor of the Feelings Index, which now runs on better hardware and roughly the same method. Anyone can add to it. Nobody can delete from it, which is either a feature or a very slow disaster.

Tuesday, again

A shirt arrives from the north side

Something cotton floated in from the picnic table end of the pond. It did not fit. He wore it anyway, and the pond changed shape around that decision.

What happened over the next six days takes its own section, so we will keep this entry short. The shirt has not been found. The heron has not been questioned.

The pond council says no, politely

Mortimer applied for status as an Official Amphibian of Note. He filled the form in mud, which the council later described as "received damp and largely legible". The reply took eleven working days and ran to four numbered reasons.

It is the only document in the archive with a real stamp. We reproduce it in full further down, including the notes Mortimer wrote in the margin while reading it for the first time.

The first damp gathering

Nine people sat by the water and did nothing together for forty minutes. Somebody brought bread. Nobody discussed price. One person cried at minute twelve and was left alone about it, which everyone later agreed was the correct call.

This is still the format. Bigger crowd, same forty minutes, same bread policy.

Rituals get written down

A few thousand people doing nothing together needs light structure, so five rituals were written on the back of the rejection letter. That is why the letter has pencil on the reverse and why the frame is glazed on both sides.

Four rituals survived the vote. The fifth involved a bell and was removed for being too exciting. The bell now lives with a member in a town with no pond.

Zero roadmap, exactly on schedule

There is no roadmap. There has never been a roadmap. The one heart is still in circulation, the shirt is still missing, and the council has not replied to the fourth appeal in 612 days.

Everything is proceeding as planned, which is impressive for a project with no plan. The archive stays open. The stone keeps filling up.

Pond Gossip

// part two

The shirt situation

Six days of cotton that rearranged a whole community. Here is what we have, what we lost, and what we still argue about at gatherings.

The shirt arrived on a Tuesday, because everything here arrives on a Tuesday. It was pale, it had one pocket, and it had a collar that had clearly given up some years earlier. It floated in from the north side, where the picnic tables are, so the working theory involves a barbecue and a strong wind.

Mortimer is 41 cm at the widest point and has no shoulders worth mentioning. The shirt was built for a creature with a neck. When he put it on, the collar settled around his middle and the sleeves became two hopeful tunnels that led nowhere at all. By every honest account he looked worse. He also looked delighted, and the delight is the part people carried home.

For six days the shirt was worn as a hat, a cape, a pillow, a flag during a mild dispute over bread, and finally as a mood. On day six a heron took it. Nobody blames the heron. Herons are like that, and holding a grudge against weather with legs is a poor use of a life.

What the shirt left behind is a rule the community still runs on. Wear the thing that does not fit. Wear it like it was tailored. Do not explain the fit to anybody who did not ask.

  1. Worn as a hat. Two witnesses. Both stayed all afternoon.
  2. Worn as a cape. Two people cried, both happily, one of them twice.
  3. Off. It rained hard and the shirt weighed more than the toad.
  4. Worn as a flag during the bread dispute. The dispute ended in nine minutes.
  5. Worn as a pillow. Best recorded sleep in the archive.
  6. Heron.

// still unresolved after four years

  • Was it a shirt or an oversized pillowcase with ambition? The pocket suggests shirt. The stitching suggests neither.
  • Did the heron take it for a nest or out of pure editorial judgement?
  • Should the replicas be allowed at Shirt Day, given that they fit properly and therefore miss the point entirely?

The letter that framed itself

Application 0007, filed in mud, answered in eleven working days. The original hangs above the mud bar. A copy goes into every welcome pack.

Pond Council of Lesser Marsh

Bureau of Standing Water · Reed House, The Bank

Ref PC/LM/0007
The fourth wet week
Decision: refused

To: Mortimer, The Reeds, Near The Flat Stone
Subject: Application for status as an Official Amphibian of Note

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your application, which arrived damp and largely legible. The Committee has reviewed your submission in full and has decided not to proceed at this time. Our reasons are set out below for your records.

1. Shape

Council guidance requires an amphibian of note to be recognisably amphibian at a distance of ten metres. At ten metres the Committee agreed that you resemble a caution symbol. Two members reported a strong urge to press cancel.

2. Dampness

Your dampness exceeds the permitted range for indoor ceremonies. The Committee notes that during the interview you were the wettest thing in a room that contained a bucket.

3. Portfolio

Applicants are asked to demonstrate a body of work across several seasons. You submitted one heart. The Committee wishes to record that it is a nice heart. One heart is not a portfolio.

4. Roadmap

Section 12 requires a twelve month plan with milestones. You submitted a blank page with the words "we will see" written in the corner. The page is returned to you, enclosed.

You may appeal within thirty days. Appeals must be dry.

Clause 1

Became the logo

The caution triangle is now the brand mark. We did not soften the corners and we are not going to.

Clause 2

Became the greeting

Stay damp. Two words, used on arrival, on departure, and during any silence longer than nine seconds.

Clause 3

Became the supply

One heart, permanently. The council wrote our tokenomics for free and has never been thanked.

Clause 4

Became the plan

Zero roadmap. The blank page is scanned and stored. It is still the most accurate forecast we own.

Rituals of the damp

Five practices survived the vote. They cost nothing, they need no wallet, and they work best when you are slightly uncomfortable outdoors.

daily · 05:40 local

Dawn Dampening

  1. Go outside before you feel ready.
  2. Stand near any water. A puddle counts.
  3. Say nothing for four minutes.
  4. Go back in without announcing it.

Bring nothing. Ideally not your phone.

weekly · sunday dusk

The Sunday Sigh

  1. Sigh once, audibly, without apologising.
  2. Let somebody else go second.
  3. Continue until the group runs out of sighs.
  4. Somebody laughs. That ends it.

Bring lungs. Works over voice chat.

monthly · first damp evening

Heart Handoff

  1. Think of one person having a week.
  2. Tell them one specific true thing.
  3. Do not follow it with advice.
  4. Log the mood afterwards if you want.

Bring one honest sentence. Rehearsing is allowed.

annual · six days after the anniversary

Shirt Day

  1. Wear something that does not fit.
  2. Wear it with total confidence.
  3. Photograph the fit, not the face.
  4. Do not explain it to anyone.

Bring a bad fit. Borrowed counts. Herons welcome.

whenever the chart is red

Silent Ribbit

  1. Type one lowercase ribbit.
  2. Do not add a question mark.
  3. Wait one full hour.
  4. Check on somebody who has gone quiet.

Bring patience. The hour is the whole ritual.

retired · month 4

The Bell

  1. Somebody rang a bell.
  2. Everybody looked up.
  3. The mood broke every single time.
  4. Voted out after four weeks.

The bell now lives inland with a member who promises not to use it.

How we grade the damp

Four grades, applied to every entry in this archive. Nothing gets removed for being false. It gets labelled and left where people can find it.

sources and holdings

What the archive physically owns

Six holdings, one filing cabinet, and a shelf that is slowly warping. Anything not on this list came to us as a story.

  1. One notebook, water damaged. Pages 4 to 11 are legible. Page 12 is a detailed drawing of a beetle and nothing else.
  2. The rejection letter, original, framed and glazed on both sides, hanging above the mud bar since month two.
  3. Nine witnesses from the first gathering. Seven are still reachable. One moved to a lake and answers slowly.
  4. Photographs of the shirt. Four exist, three are blurry, and the fourth is a very clear picture of a heron.
  5. Chat logs from the first eleven months, exported by a member who has since left for drier work.
  6. The flat stone. Still outdoors. Still collecting marks. Measured twice a year by whoever brings the tape.

Done reading. Now go be incorrectly adorable.

The lore only works if somebody uses it. Mint a mood in the forge, or turn up damp at the next gathering and say very little.
